The typical American diet is high in fat and low in fiber-filled fruits and vegetables. Over time, this can have a detrimental health on the body as a whole, and especially on the colon. Many people like to fast for a day or so before attempting any sort of colon cleanse. Cleansing can take the form of a water fast, a juice fast, or a fruits and vegetables fast. Some people choose not to fast. Eliminating things like chocolate, coffee, sugar, and dairy products can help the cleansing process to go more smoothly, if you choose not to fast.

Eating large amounts of fiber is one gentle and natural way to cleanse your colon. Some foods high in fiber include legumes, such as peas, lentils, and black beans; fruits, such as berries, apples, pears, and figs; and vegetables, such as artichokes, broccoli, and corn. Drinking plenty of water and other non-caffeinated beverages is important during this time, to help flush the fiber through your system.

Many people add supplements during this time in order to cleanse more thoroughly and to kill any possible parasites. Psyllium is one example of a natural supplement that helps to draw water into the colon. Other helpful supplements include Cascara Sagrada, flax seeds, and slippery elm. Taking probiotics, which are bacteria beneficial to the digestive tract, will also help. Garlic and acidophilus are good probiotics.

Some people like to use organic coffee or saltwater enemas to encourage complete emptying of the colon. These should be used only with proper research and care. Enemas used haphazardly and without knowledge of the correct technique can damage the rectum or even cause other health risks.
